I have seen a few things during the several inspections produced for people wanting to get a better idea of the home or commercial property they are purchasing. There are some items that I have come across that will meet the local building code - but it is sometimes better to spend a little more to install a superior, longer lasting product. This theory applies to the installation of items on a structure that start to rust the first year they are installed. This blog photo is of new sheathing on a 1.6 million dollar gulf front home. The building code allows shinny bright nails that will start to rust as they are installed. I would recommend spending the extra money for Stainless Steel nails and screws - it will pay dividends. If your home is not close to the Gulf - stainless steel is not necessary, one should still pay extra for hot dip galvanized nails and fasteners. This is the reason that Destin Home Depot and Lowe’s only stock Simpson or TECO tripled zinc coated - (a.k.a. - galvanized) structural fasteners, they do not want the customers complaining of rusting fastener’s = or worse - I have seen fasteners holding a deck together just barely, since the fasteners had almost rusted away.
